Let’s talk sugar — not the sweet kind, but the kind that's quietly sabotaging our health. The bitter truth? Sugar is being sneakily added to almost everything we consume in India, and most of us don’t even realize it.
Shocking Fact: Sugar is in Your Baby’s Cereal and Your Evening Namkeen which you prefer to avoid sugar
Think sugar is only in desserts? Think again.
From so-called “healthy” baby cereals to salty snacks like namkeen, sugar is everywhere. Even packaged fruit juices, breakfast cereals, ketchup, breads — all loaded with unnecessary sugar.
Baby cereal brands in India have been found to contain up to 5g of added sugar per serving — at an age where sugar should be close to zero.
That savory packet of namkeen? Some brands contain 3-6g of sugar per 100g — why does a salty snack need sugar?
Same Products, Different Standards Abroad
Here’s the kicker: the exact same products are sold without added sugar in the US, UK, and Europe.
Multinational brands often create separate formulations — cleaner and chemical-free for global markets, but filled with additives and sugar for India.
For example, many leading jams sold in India contain up to 44g of sugar per 100g, while their European versions contain less than half that — with natural sweeteners or no sugar at all.
Where Are the Local Authorities?
Despite a growing body of evidence, food labeling in India remains vague, misleading, and poorly regulated.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has laid out sugar limits — but enforcement is weak and loopholed.
❗ No “added sugar” warning is mandatory on products aimed at children.
❗ Front-of-pack labeling? Still not properly implemented or standardized.
Diabetes: A National Crisis
India is now home to over 101 million diabetic patients, according to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR, 2023). That’s roughly 1 in 11 Indians.
In the last decade alone, diabetes cases have doubled in both rural and urban areas.
Sugar-sweetened beverages are a major contributor, especially among young adults.
It’s Not Just Diabetes: Sugar Is Messing with All Age Groups
-
Children: Hyperactivity, mood swings, early onset obesity
-
Teenagers: Hormonal imbalance, insulin resistance
-
Adults: Fatty liver, metabolic syndrome, type-2 diabetes
-
Elderly: Increased risk of dementia and heart disease
What Can We Do?
-
Read labels (look for sucrose, dextrose, corn syrup, etc.)
-
Push for cleaner brands — support those that are transparent
-
Demand regulation — better labeling, school food guidelines, and limits on child-targeted advertising
-
Raise awareness — share articles (like this one 😄), talk about it
It’s time to call out this silent sugar invasion.
Our plates deserve better — and so do our people. Until authorities act, let’s be our own watchdogs.
